Amazon Prime Day 2017: A field guide

It’s going to feel Christmassy already this July as online retail giant Amazon holds its discount extravaganza Prime Day on July 11 (Deals will be announced starting 9pm ET, July 10). As in the last two years, millions of items – from home supplies to gadgets – will be sold on marked-down prices at Amazon during the event. New  deals appear every ten minutes, so you’ve got to always keep your cursor near the Add to Cart button.

While waiting for the big day, let’s walk you through Prime Day basics first:

1. What is Amazon Prime Day? It’s a 30-hour online shopping event mounted by Amazon US to celebrate its anniversary in July. Customers who are holding Prime membership get to shop for goods at discounted prices. For instance, the Samsung 55-Inch Smart TV, which sells for US$903.66 today at Amazon, was offered at $649.99, reports nbcnews.com. The Toshiba Chromebook 2 went on sale for $279.99 from the original $399.99. Discounts on clothing, shoes and jewelry were as much as 30%. Athletic shoes were sold at 60% discount.

2. The discounts excite me. Tell me more about Prime membership. Amazon Prime is a type of membership at Amazon where subscribers pay a yearly fee of $99. This entitles them to a free two-day shipping for eligible items, and in some U.S. cities, even a same-day delivery where they receive the items within two hours of placing their orders. The membership also comes with unlimited access to  Amazon Prime videos, movies, TV shows, songs, ebooks, and audiobooks. See the Amazon Prime page to know the other benefits.

3. Neat! But how do I become an Amazon Prime member in the first place? Anybody can be a Prime member, as long as you have a credit card and a U.S. or Puerto Rican (the only eligible country outside the U.S.) address.

4. But I’m from (insert name of non-U.S. country here). Don’t worry, you can get around that. Sign up with comGateway and we’ll give you a U.S. address you can indicate as your shipping address. It’s our warehouse in Portland, Oregon, where Amazon will ship your orders to. From there, we’ll ship your package to your home country.

5. I love discount shopping, but $99 is a bit pricey. Is there a way I can become a Prime member for cheaper? When you join Amazon Prime, you have the option to be charged either monthly or yearly. For monthly subscription, you pay only $10.99 a month. PRO TIP: you can avail yourself of the free 30-day trial. You can sign up for the trial, and enjoy shopping on Prime Day. Be keen about your membership though, as Amazon automatically upgrades trials into paid memberships.
