Unmask your skin’s real beauty with do-it-yourself face masks

For many women, the facial mask is a mainstay in their skincare regimen, and for good reasons. A facial mask does everything: from soothing to hydrating; from adding glow to delaying aging. The results are visible right away, too. That’s why most women make it a point they get a face mask before a big occasion. Perhaps no other treatment gives them that “have had a beauty sleep” look more than a face mask does.

More than a cosmetic practice, face masks are also strongly associated with relaxation. Many women’s idea of “me time” is going to a spa and having an aesthetician paint over their faces emulsions mixed in with exotic ingredients. Some prefer to do it at home by themselves using store-bought face masks.

If you go to a department store’s skincare section today, you’ll be amazed at the variety of face masks available. There seems to be one for every skincare concern. Where to begin?

A way to sift through the abundance of face masks is by choosing those suitable for your skin type. Here, we identify four skin types and recommend appropriate face mask brands:

1. For sensitive skin. For skin prone to redness and itching, use a face mask that soothes and protects it from irritation. For instance, Cosmedix’s Rescue+Intense Hydrating Balm and Mask has willow herb extract, which has pain-relieving properties; while Borghese’s Fango Delicato Active contains chamomile, which is known for its calming effects.

2. For dry skin. If your skin is on the dry side, you need a face mask that will supply it with moisture. Fresh’s Rose Face Mask’s two main ingredients make it perfect for dry skin: rosewater, a popular soothing substance; and Porphyridium cruentum, or red algae that retain moisture. Other face masks suitable for dry skin include Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask and SK II Facial Treatment Mask.

3. For oily skin. Of all the skin types, oily is the most prone to skin problems like acne. It’s because too much oil traps dirt under the skin. To thoroughly clean your skin, pick a face mask with exfoliating ingredients, such as fruit enzymes. The papaya enzyme in Alba Botanica’s Papaya Enzyme Facial Mask peels off dead skin and lightens the complexion.  You would also do well with a face mask with bacteria-killing ingredients like cinnamon, which is present in Eminence’s Hungarian Herbal Mud Treatment.

Mario Badescu’s Healing and Soothing Mask, on the other hand, is especially formulated for oily skin. In this face mask, minerals and natural ingredients such as oatmeal and olive leaf extract work together to “restore balance” to your skin.

4. Aging skin. There is no stopping aging. Like it or not, wrinkles will appear across your forehead, crow feet will form in the corners of your eyes, and your cheeks will sag. The good news, though, is aging and the appearance of its signs can be delayed. The Mayo Clinic prescribes ways you can keep your skin youthful-looking for longer, foremost among them protecting your skin from the sun. Smoking should also be avoided, as it leads to the narrowing of blood vessels in the skin and destroys its collagen and elastin, causing the skin to sag.

The renowned US hospital also advises using skincare products like moisturizers as they can “temporarily mask wrinkles and fine lines.” There are also face masks available in the market that can do the same, such as Bioxidea’s Miracle 24 Face Mask and Arbonne’s RE9 Advanced Cellular Renewal Masque. Miracle 24 fills the facial skin with antioxidants, thus improving its appearance. On the other hand, the alpha hydroxy acids in RE9 not only exfoliate the skin but also stimulate it to produce collagen and so make the skin look tighter.

The effect of face masks on the skin is often described as “nourishing”, as if the skin is a field finally getting rain after a long dry spell. Like farm soil that is constantly turned, plowed, and grown in, your skin also experiences its own share of stresses. Replenish its health by blanketing it with a nourishing layer of face mask.
